CULTURE

At Melkbosstrand we believe in the balanced development of the learner, mind, body and soul. We strive to offer every student the opportunity to expand their potential in every field. Our cultural activities are innovative and, not only will they have an impact on the learner’s self awareness and self esteem, but they will also bear fruit outside of the school portals. We are supporting our kids to be caring, considerate and valuable members of society.
We have excellent drama and music teachers who are all artists in their own right and who is helping to develop our school’s drama talent. The drama group participates annually in competitions and two of our learners received their national colours in drama in 2018. The group also won several gold medals at the annual Montague Art Festival. The technical team (sound and lights) also won medals.
We had several of our learners who qualified as crew members at the NSRI and who qualified at the first NSRI life saving pilot project. All of them are doing voluntary service at the local station on a weekly basis. They are all qualified first aiders and together with the school’s qualified first aiders deliver high quality service at all sport events and camps.
We also have a Rotary Interact club that works closely with the local Rotary club in our local society.
Several of our learners dancing with Dance United qualified this year for the national team that is participating internationally this year.
Our flag and drum Majorette group is doing extremely well and is an independent group relying on ex-learners who acts as coaches and parents managing the activities. They participated in Nationals in 2018 and did extremely well.
We have a lively choir and are looking forward to this year’s performance. We consistently won the interschools spirit cup against Milnerton and Edgemead for the past few years. We run an annual Orange week in which life choices are presented in a fun and educational way.
As head of culture I have a passion for the arts and believe that it is one of the best healing tools. I believe in balance and a believe learners should develop holistically in academics, sport and culture. Participation and service keeps a teenager happy and smiling. Each in his/her own right.
